Please explain. I'm undecide which device I should get. I like to surf the internet, load pictures, watch movies, listen to songs, and take pictures, video camera (nice, but don't have to have it). I don't want to be bounded to a contract.

How do you load games into NINTENDO DSI?

I'm thinking of getting one of these but I'm clueless about the media they use. Do they have little cartridges or game chips, tiny cd's or do you have to download them? No idea. I googled it and still couldn't find the answer. Also if you own one would you recommend it?

The Nintendo dsi is already out and selling well in Japan. In fact, it sold over 1 million dsi consoles in a little over 2 months. It is meant to hit the UK around April and should hit the USA at around about the same time. They are possibly taking their time in releasing it in these two markets for two reasons. One, to ensure that Japan has plenty of stock to meet demand. Two, to ensure that they sell as many ds lite’s as possible before the new dsi comes out.

Now, the question is, if you live in the UK, should you pre-order the Nintendo dsi console, or should you wait for it to be available?

Now, the Pros:

You get to have the dsi before any of your mates, and the general public get their hands on it. This means you will have bragging rights and become ‘the gamer’ friend everyone has. Apart from public admiration, you will also be able to enjoy using the dsi in the privacy of your room and get to know it. This means that when the dsi does come out and your friends get their own copy, you will be the first person they turn to with any questions they have about it. Now, you can either help them out for free, or you can get them to pay you in Pizza and beer.

Cons:

Well, as you are importing the dsi, you will pay a little more for it than you would in the UK. It is set to retail in the UK for roughly £120, but you are looking at paying around £150-£170 for an imported version.

This is not a huge difference, but still, during these tough times cash is tight.

The second con is that the dsi console will be region locked. This means that you will have to learn some Japanese in order to get the potential out of the games. The reasons they have given for this is because different areas have different age limits, and because they will be using the dsiware differently for different geographical locations.

Well, I hope this has helped you choose not to pre-order your dsi console, as it wont be that much longer to wait to have it in the UK.

One would expect the release of a new games console like the Nintendo DSi, the eagerly awaited successor to the DS Lite, to be wrapped up in all sorts of technological superlatives – the fastest this, the biggest that, the most megapixel other – but that doesn’t appear to be the case with the DSi, in fact Nintendo certainly seem to have aimed for the creative over the technological with this release. How so? Mainly in two areas, the camera and the music player. To release a console (or any piece of gadget gear) these days with a camera resolution of 0.3 megapixels is a bit like Dr Evil proudly announcing a ransom of “One Million Dollars!” – it barely raises an eyebrow. Add to that a music player that doesn’t support MP3 files (only AAC) and you wonder what Nintendo’s angle really is, but the company have pre-empted these questions rather well.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said on the subject at the October launch announcement of the DSi:

“You might share the impression that since many of today’s mobile phones already incorporate similar camera and audio player functions, this news many not seem to play any significant role in further expanding DS. Whilst these functions for mobile phones are offered as extra utility tools, we would like to propose with DSi the entertainment value of playing with and enjoying visuals and sounds by using these functions in more proactive and fun ways in your daily activities.”

So the point with the DSi is not “How many megapixel is the camera?” but “It’s got a simple camera (2, actually), now take a picture and we’ll give you the ability to have some fun with it”. There are 11 different effects you can use to play with and enhance your images, from stretching and mirroring to comparing and morphing two faces together. The point is not “The DSi will replace your iPod as your main music player” but “Take your favourite track or record something with the built-in microphone and see what you can do with it”. The DSi Sound application lets you adjust speed and pitch of a song or other audio file independently, as well as adding effects galore.

These creative angles come together to make a fun mini media centre, as one site pointed out “the ultimate blogging tool”, as the features described combine with an updated version of the DS Browser and (for the first time on a handheld console) firmware that’s upgradable via the web to make for a new console that feels like it’s of it’s time – capturing the zeitgeist…

Who needs more megapixels – let’s get creative.

Many people have been trying to decide whether they will buy the DSi console when it comes to the UK, or just keep their existing DS Lite. We have put together a quick little comparison table to hopefully make your decision easier. In it you can compare the DSi to the DS lite along various features.

Size-wise the DS Lite is quite similar to the DSi console. The only real difference is that the Nintendo DSi is thinner than its counterpart. How much thinner, well it is 12% thinner to be exact. This might not seem like a huge difference, but in a world where our gadgets need to fit into out bags and pockets and travel around with us, every inch counts. The DSi will also weigh slightly less at 214 grams versus 218 grams.

The screen of the Nintendo DSi is also larger, being 3.25 inches and the DS lite at 3 inches. This will make game play easier, and suits the purposes of the DSi quite well, as it will be helpful when browsing the internet. The aspect that has taken a beating with the new DSi is that the battery life is almost half as powerful as the DS lite. This is an issue and one that Nintendo will have to work on improving.

Other notable differences include the fact that the DSi has 2 cameras versus the DS lites none, there is a built-in flash, built-in web browser, an SDcard and the DSi can be fully charged in 30 min, which is roughly 1/6 of the time it takes the DS lite.

Apart from this the Nintendo DSI console has a new advanced and sexy-looking interface. The console’s menu system is similar in design to the Wii Channel, and it features five programs: DSi Camera, DSi Sound, DSi Shop, Picto Chat, and Download Play.

The Nintendo DSi is the third incarnation of the popular series of Nintendo handheld gaming devices. The original Nintendo DS was lauchched in 2004 with its successor, the DS Lite, launching in 2006. The DSi is, at the time of writing, only available in Japan where it was launched in October 2008. It is expected to be released in the US and Europe around May 2009. The DSi introduces a number of technical improvements over its predecessor the DS Lite. The purpose of this article is to summarise these improvements to enable the reader to decide whether the new Nintendo DSi fulfils their requirements.

The first improvement to greet the user is the DSi’s thinner casing. It is 2.6mm or around 12% thinner than the DS Lite. This is in part achieved by the removal of the GameBoy Advance cartridge slot found on the DS Lite, thus eliminating the new units backward compatibility with such games.

The second major visual improvement is the larger dual 3.25 inch LCD screens compared to the 3 inch screens in the DS Lite. Despite the larger screens the DSi still retains the same case width and height of the DS Lite. Whilst the new screens represent a 17% greater visual area the downside is a reduction in battery life from around 19 hours down to 14 hours at the lowest screen brightness setting. The new screens also have five brightness levels of adjustment compared to the previous four. The bottom screen is still a touch screen as per the previous generation unit.

Sound is another area of improvement for the DSi. The unit boasts improved speakers over the DS Lite although until the units can be directly compared we cannot speculate on how big a difference to sound quality the improvements make. The DSi now includes an MP3 music player as standard using the new integrated SD card slot as a source. The music must be in AAC format to be recognised by the unit.

The new unit features cameras for the first time on a Nintendo handheld device. The DSi incorporates two, one on the hinge between the screens (facing the user) and one on the outside of the casing. New software on the DSi allows users to manipulate photos in real time, although it is clear the cameras are included more as a fun accessory than for serious photography as they are only of 0.3 mega pixel resolution.

Nintendo has also made a raft of improvements under the skin of the DSi. The main processor is still an ARM9 model but now running at 133MHz, twice the speed of the 67MHz DS Lite unit. The co-processor is still an ARM7 unit running at 33MHz. The DSi now boasts 16MB of RAM memory (compared with 4MB in the Lite) and 256MB of internal storage memory. The 802.11 wireless connectivity is carried over from the old unit, albeit with speed improvements made when used with DSi specific software bought from the DSi shop (see below).

A new feature brought to the DSi is the DSi online shop, similar to those used for full-sized consoles such as the Sony PS3, Microsoft Xbox and Nintendo’s own Wii. Here users will be able to download both free and purchased content for their device. One of the first downloads will be a free web browser to allow the DSi to access the internet. Another first for the DSi will be the ability to upgrade the firmware (or operating system) of the device, something never previously possible on a handheld Nintendo unit.

We trust that the article has served to highlight the technical improvements found in the Nintendo DSi over the previous generation DS Lite. New users looking for such a device would be well placed to wait for the unit to launch in their region. Existing users of the DS Lite should be able to use the information above in deciding whether to upgrade their current unit.

First there was the Nintendo DS and then the Nintendo DS Lite. Now there is the Nintendo DSi, which will be released in America and the UK on April 5th, 2009 after first being released back on November 1, 2008 in Japan. The MSRP will be £149.99 and will be available in the colors of blue, black and white.

Those who already have the Nintendo DS Lite may be wondering what the major differences are between what they have and the new Nintendo DSi that is coming out shortly. Although by first glance there may not be many differences that are seen between the two models, upon closer review you will see that there in fact many improvements made to the new Nintendo DSi.

To start with, the Nintendo DSi is twelve percent slimmer then the DS Lite. The screen on the old Nintendo DS Lite was a just 3 inches but the newer version comes with screens that are 3.25 inches. There have also been better and improved speakers installed that means players will receive a much better sound quality for their various games. But the improvements that the Nintendo DSi has over the older version does not stop there.

Instead of a power switch like the DS Lite had, the Nintendo DSi has a power button, which is located alongside the touch screen on the bottom left hand side. There are also now five brightness settings compared the four that were available before. While that may be exciting there is a downfall here. The DSi has a battery life of only 14 hours on the lowest brightness setting compared to the 19 hours the DS Lite gives on its lowest brightness setting.

So whether you are looking into the Nintendo DSi as a first time player or you simply want to upgrade your current model, there are many things to take into consideration. When the Nintendo DSi was first released in Japan, it sold 171,925 units on its first two days of being available to the public according to Media Create. Within one months time a total of 535,379 units sold in Japan. Once the release hit is two-month mark, total unit sales reached 1,280,000 according to Enterbrain.

What does this mean to you? If you are one of the people waiting patiently in the UK and North America to get your hands on your very own Nintendo DSi then you may have a situation on your hands. Some stores may allow you to pre-order while others will be a first come first serve. If you are not ready and waiting for the moment that this game system hits the store shelves you may find yourself waiting for the next shipment to arrive. Whether you get it on its first release date or shortly thereafter, it is certainly worth the purchase.

Its worth looking to see which retailers near you or which one of your favorite online gaming stores will have the new Nintendo DSi in stock. This way you will be prepared for the release date. My kids cant wait to get theirs.
