Around The World – Yahoo! News UK

Exactly a year ago I transferred from AFP’s Moscow bureau to New York. I’m still adjusting.

In some ways, there’s nothing to adjust to.

Moving between AFP offices can be a Groundhog Day experience. After all, reporters dress pretty much the same and the office hum is identical: staff speaking in several languages, televisions chattering, the bleat of telephones, tapping at keyboards.

But what happens outside — and how journalists find out — is different.

Moscow is what we call a hard news bureau. Jerusalem and Washington are other examples – places where wire service reporters, tasked with covering the day’s events, barely come up for breath.

New York is not like that. Sure, there’s breaking news. This January’s miraculous splash landing of an American Airways jet in the Hudson River was the kind of fast-paced story at the core of AFP’s mission.

But because New York is not a capital (regardless what its famously opinionated residents might think), the flow is erratic. Several days can pass without major hard news.

This means reporters need to think forward, rather than react. They need to concentrate on sniffing out trends, exploring odd stories, and angles that other outlets dismissed as unimportant. They have to get creative.

And this makes New York a dream posting. One day I’ll cover finance, the next some poetry event in the Village, and the next a society trial, or art auction. My assignments are as diverse as the city itself.

Yet there are advantages to a hard news bureau.

New York stories may be fun to write and read, but they don’t often head the news menu AFP sends to clients every few hours.

In Moscow, almost every day brought a top story. Bombs, murders of dissidents, major accidents, the mysterious workings of the Kremlin: the news never stopped and my editors always wanted more.

The actual news gathering process is different too.

Government spokesmen in Moscow don’t like answering the phone. If they do, they often speak in cryptic, incomplete sentences, before hanging up. Orwellian propaganda aired over and over — unchallenged — by the state media, can be maddening.

Yet there’s an old-fashioned excitement to Moscow reporting. Because all foreign journalists there are baffled to some extent, you’ll always have a chance to write something the others have missed. Travel beyond Moscow, say to the turbulent Caucasus region, and you may truly break new ground. A reporter can’t ask for better.

And in New York? Well, spokesmen here love to speak — in fact they hardly ever shut up.

Every day they fill my inbox with emails promoting stories, ready-to-use quotes, and announcements. If I don’t call, the PR people may well call me.

Research is a breeze, too. The kind of statistics and documents treated almost as state secrets in Russia are easily available online, while even the most obscure court papers appear on a dedicated website.

Being spoonfed, though, can be unhealthy. Spend too much time deskbound in Moscow and you become jaded. Do the same thing in New York and you risk laziness.

So the challenges are different.

Yet the solution is the same. East or West, the journalist’s golden rule always applies: pick up your notebook and get out of the office.

In this blog, reporters and editors for global news wire AFP blog about the news they report and the challenges they face covering events from Baghdad to Beijing, the White House to Darfur. Sebastian Smith reports for AFP from New York.

I wish more reporters would do as you suggest in your last sentance.. pick up their notebook and get out of the office. Too many jouralists rely on 2nd or 3rd hand reports to construct their own reports.

yeah but what about the penguins what dont want to eat pineapple… what do we give them eh..ehh..hey.?

thourght so!

Oh my how would we live without you all? Maybe we should have an amnesty and stop journalists writing for a month.

I suspect there is not difference, I think the West is just a little more adept at hiding the truth!

Wow… I don't know how you stand all the stress. Your blood pressure must be through the roof. The whole world must be biting their nails waiting for the next revelation. It's affected me so much just reading what goes on that I'll have to have a little snooze to recover. Wake we up when the next brown stuff hits the fan. Good Night. ZZZzzzzzz

who cares about all of your self inflicted stress

Biggie and Tupac, That was the true East Versus West… plus it had an effective climax, the two “leaders” were assasinated… now my journo, read between those lines

trojan250@ymail.com – I have done the same! – the freegift and sugar daddy stuff, is beginning to get on my nerves! –

I urge others to do similar and get rid of these scamsters advertising their crummy websites (occasionally under different names).

I have lived in the West and the East and I prefer the West to be honest.

What exactly was the point of this pointless article except to fill empty columns inches ?.
